Cholmondeley Castle is a country house in the civil parish of Cholmondeley, Cheshire, England. Together with its adjacent formal gardens, it is surrounded by parkland. The site of the house has been a seat of the Cholmondeley family since the 12th century.

At the rear of the Cafe are several pathways that lead you up onto Tower Hill. The area was cleared of dangerous old trees, and untidy undergrowth in the 1980’s, and with the help of the countryside commission extensive planting of indigenous trees was undertaken.

The Temple Garden is the piece de resistance of Cholmondeley, with the main feature being the small lake and its two islands. Entering through the stone gatehouse, the area on the left contains many interesting shrubs and is looked over by Eucalyptus gunnii (Cider Gum), and Arbutus xAndrachnoides, both with fabulous bark.

Leading along the gardens central axis between the Rose Garden and the Temple Garden is the Lavinia Walk which is a new feature of the gardens, and a fitting tribute to Lady Lavinia and her legacy.

This area has its own microclimate which can be quite noticeable in the early season. In the early 1960’s this area of the garden was cleared of a jungle of Laurels, Rhododendron ponticum, bamboos and dead trees, with beds being laid out in a relaxed style.

Now open, the Four Seasons Rose Garden. Throughout the past few years, the new Four Seasons Rose Garden has quietly begun to take shape. This has created two very different connected rose rooms between old and new. With 800 new plantings, the Rose Garden will be a highlight in May and June.

This part of the garden has seen huge transformation in recent years. The area once housed a collection of ornamental duck, but sadly had become overgrown with Japanese Knotweed and other invasive species and fallen into neglect. The knotweed was treated over several years and other rogue trees and undergrowth were removed.

This area was fenced off from the park in 1972 in order to contain a number of trees presented by friends to mark Lord and Lady Cholmondeley’s silver wedding. It was already planted with a mixture of Oak and Beech, with Scots Pine and Western Hemlock added to act as a wind break for the Temple Garden. There are a number of remarkable trees here including some quite rare specimens with a row of Sorbus ‘John Mitchell’ lining the road.
